What is delayed puberty?
Delayed puberty is when puberty hasn’t started by age 9 for females and 12 for males.
Precocious puberty usually occurs before the age of eight in girls and before the age of nine in boys. The cause is often unknown.
Symptoms in girls include breast development and a first period. Symptoms in boys include enlarged testicles and penis, a deepening voice and facial hair, often on the upper lip.
Treatment typically involves medication to delay further development.
